Who are we?
FRONTIERS is the science journalism initiative funded by the ERC to design a residency program for journalists wishing to experience an immersive period in a research institution. Our website address is https://frontiers.media.

What data do we collect?
The FRONTIERS’ project website is a self-hosted WordPress website. Its access and navigation don’t require user registration.
FRONTIERS may collect the following information from individuals:
- Personal data (Name, email address, job title, organization, age, gender, country of residence, social media profiles, etc.)
General (aggregate, non-personal) information including internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet Service Provider (ISP), date and time stamp, referring/exit pages, and possibly the number of clicks.
Why do we collect data?
FRONTIERS may collect your personal and/or general information for the following purposes:
- Email you a newsletter.
- Process your application to the science journalism residence program.
- Create a database of research projects and institutions, publicly available on the FRONTIERS’ website.
- Receive your questions and feedback via a contact form on our website.
- Monitor and track users’ visits to the website.
How do we collect data?
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Newsletter
Our site uses Mailchimp to collect and manage contacts and send a newsletter to our subscribers. With your consent, Mailchimp records your email address, IP address, and timestamp once you complete and submit the signup form.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Cookies
FRONTIERS uses cookies to monitor the traffic using the website, and to learn the location of our website users (city and country, not exact location), how they reached our website and how long they spend on the website. This data is processed in aggregate form and is only used for internal reporting. It is not sold to, or shared with, any third parties.
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
Analytics
Our site uses Google Analytics to track users’ visits and usage of the website. With your consent, Google Analytics will collect your data and provide us with information about your usage of the FRONTIERS website.
Litecache Speed
FRONTIERS site utilizes caching in order to facilitate a faster response time and better user experience. Caching potentially stores a duplicate copy of every web page that is on display on this site. All cache files are temporary and are never accessed by any third party, except as necessary to obtain technical support from the cache plugin vendor. Cache files expire on a schedule set by the site administrator, but may easily be purged by the admin before their natural expiration, if necessary.
Akismet
This site collects information about visitors who comment on Sites that use our Akismet Anti-spam service. The information collected includes the commenter’s IP address, user agent, referrer, and Site URL (along with other information directly provided by the commenter such as their name, username, email address, and the comment itself).
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. Our privacy policy applies only to our website, so if you click on a link to another website, you should read their privacy policy.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Forms
FRONTIERS collects users’ information through forms available on this website. Information submitted by science journalists is securely stored by FRONTIERS and is not shared publicly. Information submitted by host researchers and institutions is securely stored and shared in a database on the website, after obtaining consent from the users.
Who do we share your data with?
FRONTIERS will generally not share personal information with anyone except the European Commission, if it so requests. All partners will treat information received from other partners as confidential and will not disclose it to third parties, unless it is obvious that the information is already publicly available or there is a legal obligation to do so. The partners will impose the same obligations on their employees and suppliers.
We may occasionally share personal data with third parties, such as those listed above (Google Analytics, Mailchimp, etc.), to help us deliver efficient and quality services. When we do so, we ensure that recipients are contractually bound to safeguard the data we entrust to them before we actually share the data.
How long we retain your data?
We will only retain your personal data for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill the purposes we collected it.
What rights do you have over your data?
If you have an account on this site, left comments, or have submitted an application form or an Expression of interest to become a host researcher or institution, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
The right to rectification: You have the right to request that FRONTIERS corrects any information you believe is inaccurate. You also have the right to request FRONTIERS to complete the information you believe is incomplete.
The right to data portability: You have the right to request that FRONTIERS transfer the data that we have collected to another organization, or directly to you, under certain conditions.
